- McGowan Government delivers election commitment for major upgrades to Geraldton Basketball Stadium
- Upgrades include construction of four new indoor courts for the Geraldton Amateur Basketball Association
- Investment will help grow participation in basketball in the Mid-West
A multi-million dollar upgrade to the Geraldton Basketball Stadium has been officially unveiled today by Premier Mark McGowan and Sports Minister David Templeman.
The major upgrade was an election commitment and part of the McGowan Government's Plan for Geraldton. It was jointly funded by the McGowan Government - which invested $3.5 million - and the Geraldton Amateur Basketball Association (GABA), which provided $1.05 million.
Additions to the facility include four new indoor courts for the GABA, helping to provide more sporting opportunities and grow participation in basketball for people in the Mid-West.
A commemorative plaque was unveiled by Premier McGowan and Minister Templeman at the stadium today, marking the successful completion of this significant community infrastructure project.
The GABA currently has more than 2,300 members and operates a high-standard junior and senior competition as well as hosting the Buccaneers State Basketball League team.
It also operates several programs to support the diverse needs of the community including Aussie Hoops, Midnight Basketball Program for Indigenous youth, and the Wheelchair Competition.
Comments attributed to Premier Mark McGowan:
"Community sport is the heart and soul of our regional communities, and cities like Geraldton deserve top-notch sporting facilities.
"These important upgrades were championed by Lara Dalton and the Geraldton Amateur Basketball Association, and I'm proud to see our election commitment come to fruition.
"This is a significant investment into the Geraldton community that will see local aspiring basketball champions on the courts for generations to come."
Comments attributed to Sport and Recreation Minister David Templeman:
"The GABA plays an essential role in connecting the whole community with sport, which is a key priority of the McGowan Government.
"I'm proud that the McGowan Government has chosen to fund this project, which will go a long way towards providing more sporting opportunities to people in Geraldton and the greater Mid-West.
"I'd also like to acknowledge the GABA for its hard work in bringing this project to life - providing better places for people to play sport and recreate helps keep Western Australians of all ages and walks of life active, healthy and more connected with their communities."
Comments attributed to Geraldton MLA Lara Dalton:
"Having experienced many years as a kid playing on the outside bitumen courts, and as a previous coach, player, and parent, I am absolutely delighted to see this project come to fruition. It has been a grass roots campaign, with many hours dedicated to it from various committee members.
"Along with my good friend and former colleague Laurie Graham, I have fought hard to see it funded. We have supported the development every step of the way.
"We know that the community will benefit from this new facility for decades to come. "
