The WA State Governments Social Housing Economic Recovery Package (SHERP) provides crucial funds for repairs and upgrades to social housing to improve amenities and extend the life of tenanted properties in Geraldton and across the state.

A property upgrade in Mount Tarcoola, managed by Murchison River Aboriginal Corporation (MRAC), costing $59,099 is one of many projects to be completed by the organisation, who received a grant of $221,313 through the program.

The project was managed by Reg Pomeroy Building Service and funded works included fascia, gutter, down pipe repairs; brickwork, windows and ceiling repairs; and internal and external painting.

MRAC took the opportunity whilst the property was vacant to install new flooring and complete some other maintenance works.

MRAC’s current tenant was relocated to another property and is looking forward to returning to their upgraded home.

More than $9.3 million from the SHERP program was allocated to Geraldton in January 2022 to undertake refurbishment projects to provide safe and secure housing for vulnerable Western Australians.

Comments attributed to Lara Dalton MLA:

Refurbishments such as these are critical to ensuring we do not lose housing stock and provide more people with a place to call home.

It was wonderful to be able to see first-hand the renovations and upgrades that have been completed by local contractors, and to hear about the significant work that MRAC are doing in the affordable housing space.

Comments attributed to Mary Marshall, MRAC CEO:

This funding has enabled MRAC to upgrade this property to contemporary standards, improve current and future tenant amenity and ensure the integrity of the property for the longer term.”

“Our thanks to Minister John Carey and Department of Communities for this funding opportunity and to our local MP Lara Dalton for making the time to meet with us on site to inspect the finished upgrade.”
